Vice-President of the European Union Margaritis Schinas warned that the ongoing migrant situation in Belarus presented a major security threat to the European Union during a Strasbourg plenary session of the European Parliament on Tuesday.

“Belarus’ actions represent the real and present threat to border control and security. We have to call a spade a spade. Insidious actions are what they are. A determined attempt to create a continuing and protracted crisis as part of a broader, coordinated effort to destabilise the European Union, testing our unity and resolve,” explained Schinas.

“This is not a migration crisis. This is not a migration issue. This is a major security threat,” added Schinas.

Schinas also accused Belarusian and Russian state controlled media of “organised disinformation and the manipulation of information”, noting that the EU would work to “debunk and publicly expose” it in order to “inform would-be migrants of the realities that they would face.”

“There are at the exterior borders of Europe dictatorships that do not dream our democratic model, that do not like the freedoms, that do not like the rule of law,” said Charles Michel, the President of the European Council.

“Our capacity to protect our exterior borders is also based on our capacity to defend the model that we want for our citizens,” added Michel.

Several thousand refugees from the Middle East and Africa came to Belarus tried to reach Poland and the European Union in early November, in an attempt blocked by the Polish authorities, which resulted in the migrants setting up a camp, which has since been cleared by Belarusian authorities last week.

The migrants have since been moved to a logistics centre in Bruzgi.

Last week also saw the departure of the first repatriation flight from Minsk to Baghdad via Erbil, with hundreds onboard, as the crisis enters its third week.

Warsaw and the EU blamed Minsk for orchestrating the crisis as a ‘hybrid attack’ in retaliation for sanctions, which the Belarusian government has denied.

SOT, Margaritis Schinas, Vice-President of the European Union: “Europe is fighting, our systems of public health and public education are under strain but resist the unprecedented pressure. Our model of society is being tested but holds. Our ambitious vaccination program is under full development, we have approved therapeutics and we have assure over about five billion for the next two years of vaccines, that are reliable and tested by science, and approved by independent regulators.”

SOT, Charles Michel, President of the European Council (French): “And it is also the case when the hybrid attacks no longer are theoretical and virtual threats, but become real. We have been tested and we reacted. We are lucid, not everything is solved, evidently. There are at the exterior borders of Europe dictatorships that do not dream our democratic model, that do not like the freedoms, that do not like the rule of law. Our capacity to protect our exterior borders is also based on our capacity to defend the model that we want for our citizens. I am rather proud, dear colleagues, that the European Commission encouraged by the European Council had decided, as announced just now, to strengthen the resources to support the countries that are at the direct borders, who protect the entire European Union.”

SOT, Margaritis Schinas, Vice-President of the European Union: “Belarus’ actions represent the real and present threat to border control and security. We have to call a spade a spade. Insidious actions are what they are. A determined attempt to create a continuing and protracted crisis as part of a broader, coordinated efford to destabilise the European Union, testing our unity and resolve. This is not a migration crisis. This is not a migration issue. This is a major security threat.”

SOT, Margaritis Schinas, Vice-President of the European Union: “We will continue [to] work to debunk and publicly expose the organised disinformation and the manipulation of information by Belarusian and Russian state controlled media to inform would-be migrants of the realities that they would face.”
