"Moscow will provide all-round support to Minsk" - FM spox amid possible fresh sanctions on Belarus

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Moscow will provide all-round support to Minsk amid the possible introduction of new sanctions by the EU against Belarus, speaking at her weekly briefing in Moscow on Wednesday.

“We also see unilateral sanctions against sovereign states unacceptable and illegitimate from the point of view of international law, and reaffirm our determination to offer all-round support to Belarus and its people,” she stated.

Zakharova considered making the migrant problem a pretext for imposing new sanctions against Belarus, against other countries as inadmissible step.

She also called for not shifting the blame “for another migrant crisis outbreak” on Minsk.

“The crisis was triggered by the West’s interventions in the region of the Middle East and North Africa, and by the aftermath of the operation in Afghanistan,” she added.

Tensions between the EU and Belarus have been escalating in recent months, with the EU accusing Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of deliberately sending migrants to the border in response to sanctions imposed by the EU.

Earlier Lukashenko had stated that he would weaken control over migration at the borders with Western countries.

EU ambassadors agreed on Wednesday that Belarus migrant ‘hybrid attack’ is a legal basis for a new round of sanctions for Minsk.

SOT, Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson (Russian): “Of course, we believe that it is inadmissible to make the migrant problem a pretext for imposing new sanctions against Belarus, against other countries, including the fifth sanctions package of the European Union. To be honest, I really want to ask: if you wanted to impose new sanctions against certain country, against Minsk why should you need to come up with an excuse, you could just do it [without any excuses as you used to do sometimes]”.

This migrant crisis, this exodus of people from the countries where the so-called developed democracies decided to establish their own rules, has been in an active phase for several years already. The crisis was triggered by the West’s interventions in the region of the Middle East and North Africa, and by the aftermath of the operation in Afghanistan.”

The OSCE special monitoring mission has recorded almost 12,000 ceasefire violations over the past month since October 8. These are not just numbers, these are not just dry statistics - these are destroyed houses, killed and wounded people. Observers spotted dozens of armored vehicles and artillery pieces at railway stations near the contact line which is outside the withdrawal areas, outside designated storage areas. This clearly shows that Kiev is preparing to solve so-called Donbass liberation by force. Kiev pretense of working in a contact group also shows it’s unpreparedness to resolve the conflict through political and diplomatic means. I should outline once again – pretence of working, but not actual work”.

SOT, Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson (Russian): “Instead of stopping Ukraine’s militarisation of the Black Sea region, explaining to Kiev the unacceptability of its aggressive behaviour in Donbass and militant rhetoric, and most importantly, [explaining] the need to start negotiations with Donetsk and Luhansk immediately, Paris and Berlin seem to think more about raising their own profile on the international arena, or, there is another version, want to provide an alibi for the Kiev regime”.
