A military base in Myanmar has been captured and burned during a dawn raid by guerilla forces. An ethnic Karen militia group, opposed to Myanmar’s military junta, carried out the attack near the border with Thailand.

The incident will likely provide a morale-boost to the resistance movement in the country. Protests in major cities like Yangon and Dawei are gathering steam again, despite the grave risks involved.

Attending the ASEAN summit with regional powers last week, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and other junta leaders agreed to stop the violence. But the military has since stated that “stability” is needed before the crackdown can end.

The nation has been in turmoil since the military ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a February 1 coup, triggering an uprising that has seen security forces mount deadly crackdowns against protesters. More than 750 people have been killed since the army seized power, according to local monitoring groups.
