‘Myanmar Military Coup: Shooting of Seven-Year-Old Girl Sparks ‘Silent Protest’

Gunfire could be heard across Myanmar’s major cities after another week of violence.

On Wednesday, the country’s military junta released hundreds of political prisoners. AP journalist Thein Zaw was among those freed in Yangon after being detained in February.

The gesture is an apparent attempt by the military to placate the protest movement.

But the recent killing of a seven-year-old girl by officers in Mandalay makes that unlikely. Khin Myo Chit was shot ‘as she ran into her father’s arms’ during a home raid’ by police.

Protesters held a nationwide “silent strike” on Wednesday to commemorate the youngest victim.

With open defiance becoming more dangerous, some demonstrators held rallies at dawn.

Security forces are continuing a violent suppression of opposition to last month’s military coup.

Independent monitoring groups have confirmed at least 275 deaths since the military takeover.
