‘Navalny Protests: Thousands Arrested in Russia as Protesters Demand Putin Releases Navalny’

Thousands of protesters have been arrested across Russia as widespread anti-Kremlin protests gather momentum in the wake of opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s arrest.

In cities around the country, chants of “Freedom” and “Putin is a thief” could be heard. In Moscow, demonstrators attempted to reach the Matrosskaya Tishina prison where Mr Navalny is being detained.

He was arrested on his return to Moscow from Berlin where he was recovering from a near-fatal Novichok poisoning - an attempt on his life some believe was ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
