Locals in Amsterdam reacted on Monday to the abrupt resignation of one of Ajax’s top executives and Dutch football legend Marc Overmars over inappropriate messages he sent to female colleagues.
Supervisory board chairman Leen Meijaard added that this is a drastic situation for the women who have had to put up with the behaviour of what has been the best manager the Dutch club ever had.
“I think it’s known that he has to leave after what he did. It’s not sportive, and it’s not the image that Ajax wants to represent. So, just for the image of Ajax, it’s better that he leaves, and that’s it,” explained Pol Castellvi, an Ajax supporter.
Overmars, 48, said he was ashamed of his actions and apologised before submitting his resignation from the club’s board. Members of the club’s staff also noted that the situation was unacceptable.
One local stated, “It’s probably a cliche. I think it happens a lot, but we just don’t know about it, and it came out again, so it’s disappointing, that’s all.”
General manager Edwin van der Sar believes that more attention should be paid to such situations in the coming period, as Ajax should be a favourable working environment where actions like Overmars’ should not be allowed.

SOT, Pol Castellvi, Ajax follower: “It was just I think it’s known that he has to leave after what he did. It’s not sportive and it’s not the image at Ajax wants to represent so it’s just for the image of Ajax, it’s better that he leaves and that’s it.”

SOT, Ivo Silva, Ajax follower: “Yeah for me, it’s kind of difficult to judge, but in the end there are a lot cases like that, and I think a club like Ajax who represents a whole city has to act a bit like this, responsible, to act responsible and I think they are right to fire someone because yeah representing a big club and then just doing things were not right in my opinion.”

SOT, Ivo Silva, Ajax follower: “The things we don’t like to see because we are looking up to these people and then when people like that do this. They are like a bit of role model for everybody, there in a city, in the country, in the whole world and that’s why I think it’s a good decision what Ajax Amsterdam did.”

SOT, Football fan: “In his youth he was one of the very talented winger of Ajax and then he went to another club, I think in Spain, I don’t know, and later on he got in the Board of Directors of Ajax. He was very good in investing money, so he was very rich at a very young age. He is considered one of the best football directors of Holland and it’s a pity that it all turned this way, I think.”

SOT, Local: “It’s probably a cliche. I think it happens a lot, but we just don’t know about it, and it came out again so it’s disappointing, that’s all.”
