The European Health Medicines Agency (EMA) will wait for more data regarding a fourth vaccination dose against COVID-19, before recommending it to the broad public. The plan was confirmed by the EU watchdog’s head of the Biological Health Threats and Vaccines Strategy department Marco Cavaleri in Amsterdam on Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference, Cavaleri voiced concern about “a strategy that entangles repeated vaccination within a short term,” explaining that people with compromised immune systems should not be part of that strategy and consider getting vaccinated for the fourth time already.

Cavaleri went on to suggest that the pandemic was about to become more endemic. “What we are seeing is that we are moving towards indeed the virus becoming more endemic,” urging for caution, however, due to the Omicron variant.

“I think we cannot say that we have already reached that status. So the virus is still behaving as a pandemic virus and the omicron emergency is clearly showing that,” concluded Cavaleri.

Israel and Chile are thus far the only countries that have rolled out recommendations for a fourth vaccination dose against COVID at the time of writing. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there is no reason to believe the pandemic has reached an endemic stage yet.

So this is something that should be part of an overarching strategy on what could be the best strategy for vaccination over time, making clear that we cannot really continuously give a booster dose every three-four months. Of course, when it comes to the vulnerable and if you mean with that, immunocompromised, that will be a bit of a different story. And indeed, for immunocompromised, it will be expected that indeed the fourth dose has been already considered since time from now.”

And what is important and what we are seeing is that we are moving towards indeed the virus becoming more endemic. But I think we cannot say that we have already reached that status. So the virus is still behaving as a pandemic virus and the Omicron emergency is clearly showing that. So we should not forget we are still in a pandemic. Nevertheless, with the increase of the immunity in the population and with Omicron, there will be a lot of natural immunity taking place on top of vaccination. We will be fastly moving towards a scenario that will be closer to endemicity.”
