Netherlands: Residents return to restaurants and bars following end of COVID closures

Residents of the Dutch city of The Hague returned to restaurants and bar terraces on Wednesday, as the country eased its COVID-19 restrictions following a month of closures.

Customers were seen appearing to enjoy the city’s terraces despite the cold weather.

“It’s good to be outside again, it’s good that we can sit down, we can support the restaurants again and the bars and we have all day to ten o’clock in the evening to enjoy drinks,” said client Anne Rose Hack.

On Tuesday, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the hospitality industry could reopen until 22.00 following over a month of closures. Customers must show a COVID-19 pass and wear face masks indoors when they are not seated. Capacity limits meanwhile are in force.

COVID-19 infections are at record high levels in the Netherlands but hospitals are not as crowded as initially feared.

SOT Naomi Hack, Bar terrace customer: “We used to visit each other at home but that’s different. In your home you don’t regularly make an Irish coffee and sit outside and be served by other people. It’s really nice.:

SOT, Caro, bar terrace customer: “Yeah we miss it a lot. You couldn’t just text your friends like ‘do you want to go to the city and just have a drink?’ It wasn’t possible. And yeah, so it’s really nice to have that freedom again.”

SOT Tristan Fromberg, Bar terrace customer: “I think I do agree (with the lifting of restrictions). I guess it’s always a difficult decision to make because you really have to choose between health care and people, but I do think it’s better for people to be able to go to restaurants and especially when countries around the Netherlands are open. I think it’s very hard for people who own these establishments to be closed while they see all their customers going to different countries.”

SOT Bas Swillens, restaurant manager: “We have to check everybody’s QR code. They have to be vaccinated, cured or get tested before they want to come to the “horeca” (hospitality industry). Next to that everybody has to be seated so nobody can stand here at the table so you have to be seated and everybody has to wear masks if they’re not seated.”

SOT Bas Swillens, restaurant manager: “We have to do it. It’s okay because we can be open again and that’s for us the most important now that we can welcome our customers and our guests again, and yeah, measures or not we were happy to be open now.”

SOT Bas Swillens, restaurant manager: “It’s a good start now, but let’s hope that in a month the numbers of infections are going down and we can stay open till 00.00 or maybe 02.00 like we did before the whole pandemic.”
