Twenty female handballers huddled into a Trabant in Zwickau’s main square, Wednesday, to break the record of most people packed inside the classic GDR small car.

Hundreds of onlookers witnessed the BSV Sachsen Zwickau players successfully huddling into an iconic old-timer Trabant 607 to celebrate their promotion to the 1st division of the German handball league.

An association for the preservation of the Trabant as a cultural asset organised the record attempt.

“We didn’t even know that it would be 20 and I feel happy with all the people from Zwickau that they supported us so much. I am also happy for the Trabant and the girls from BSV Sachsen Zwickau that it all went so well,” said Wolfgang Kiessling, chairman of ‘Internationales Trabant Register’ association.

In 1976, the GDR cult TV programme “Aussenseiter - Spitzenreiter” (Outsiders - Top Riders) invited locals to the very same square to find out how many people could be jammed inside a Trabant. They fitted 17, which was the record number for more than 20 years.

A group of 18 people in Brandenburg ‘stole’ the record in 2019, and now the 20 Saxonian handballers just made Zwickau locals proud again.

They were promoted to the first German handball league this year and they did not really have a celebration because of the pandemic. That is why we said we had taken this team to pay tribute to their promotion. The spectators also want to join in the celebration of BSV Sachsen’s promotion.”

And this is one of the first vehicles that were delivered at that time. So this is a Trabant 601 original with patina, i.e. paintwork and so on from 1964.”
