Thousands of Afghans displaced by the resurgence of the Taliban have sought shelter by crossing the border near the Pakistani town of Chaman. In footage filmed in the town on Tuesday, dozens of Afghan refugees can be seen organising belongings and searching for lost family members.

The refugees are using the Bab-e Dosti border crossing to enter Pakistan, with displaced people in other parts of the country also attempting entry into Tajikistan, China, and Iran in an attempt to flee conflict.

“There was a rush across the border. Children and women passengers were in great distress. People come here for shelter. Due to overcrowding, women lost their children and men lost their women. Just now I found two missing children crying,” said an Afghan refugee who had fled Spin Boldak.

Taliban forces assumed control of Spin Boldak after clashes with the Afghan government forces earlier in the month.

“Someone’s mother was across the border. We appeal to the government of Pakistan: Extend the time for transportation at the border gate or allow Afghan citizens to seek refuge, because people are in a lot of trouble,” the refugee appealed.

The Bab-e Dosti border crossing re-opened on Monday after a period of closure caused by conflict between Afghan government forces and the Taliban.

Following 20 years of military intervention, the withdrawal of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan comes at a time of Taliban resurgence through armed conflict.

The Biden administration confirmed that all US military forces would have left the country by August 31.

SOT, Refugee (Pashto): “I just came from Spin Boldak. There was a rush across the border. Children and women passengers were in great distress. People come here for shelter. Due to overcrowding, women lost their children and men lost their women. Just now I found two missing children crying. Someone’s mother was across the border. We appeal to the government of Pakistan, extend the time for transportation at the border gate or allow Afghan citizens to seek refuge, because people are in a lot of trouble.”

SOT, Refugee (Pashto): “The situation in Afghanistan is so bad that no one can afford to stay there. We all want to come to Pakistan. Due to the rush of passengers, children, women, the sick and the elderly fall under people’s feet. This is the effort of all people. To come to Pakistan and take refuge. People are trapped in large numbers. People are being oppressed. We just ask for help and let the trapped people come and go.”
