Pedro Castillo was sworn in as Peru’s new president-elect at the national congress in Lima on Wednesday, the same day as the 200th anniversary of Peru’s declaration of independence.

Castillo walked from the Torre Tagle palace with his wife to the national congress, where he was presented with the presidential sash by the president of the congress, Maria del Carmen Alva Prieto.

“I will exercise the office of president in the constitutional period 2021-2026. I swear for the people of Peru, for a country without corruption, and for a new constitution,” Castillo solemnly declared before the members of Congress.

“On the 200th anniversary of the declaration of Peru’s independence, two centuries of republican life. It is a source of immense pride for me to be here,” he went on to say.

Castillo emphasised the colonialist past and the indigenous peoples who were subjugated millennia ago by Spanish conquistadors.

“The three centuries that this territory belonged to the Spanish crown allowed it to exploit the minerals that sustained the development of Europe, largely with the labour of the grandparents of many of us,” he stated.

“Over time, to the old Afro-Peruvian community brought by force, we added those from China and later from Japan, blood that enriched our veins but also carried with it pain,” he added.

Bolivia’s President Luis Arce, Argentina’s President Alberto Fernandez, King Felipe VI of Spain, and Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso were among the many guests attending the ceremony.

The new president will govern from 2021 to 2026 with an electoral programme that includes a bill to reform the constitution, a new social protection system, and a special emphasis on the fight against corruption.

Castillo won the 6 June run-off election against Keiko Fujimori, who finally acknowledged the result after delaying the official announcement with accusations of fraud on several ballots.

SOT, Pedro Castillo, President of Peru (Spanish): “I address you on this symbolic day, the 200th anniversary of the declaration of Peru’s independence, two centuries of republican life. It is a source of immense pride for me to be here in this room”.

SOT, Pedro Castillo, President of Peru (Spanish): “For four and a half millennia our ancestors found ways to solve problems and to live in harmony with the rich nature that Providence offered them. It was like this until the arrival of the men of Castile, who with the help of multiple and taking advantage of a moment of chaos and disunity, managed to conquer the state that until then dominated a large part of the central Andes. The defeat of the Inca Empire ushered in the colonial era.”
