PM Mikati and Jordanian counterpart hold press conference following gas supply talks in Beirut

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and his Jordanian counterpart Bishr al-Khasawneh held a press conference in Beirut on Thursday, following bilateral talks focused on ways to speed up the supply of gas and electricity to Lebanon.

“The conversation focused today, as the Prime Minister mentioned, on ways to speed up Lebanon’s receipt of Egyptian gas to help address some of the challenges of the energy and electricity sector in Lebanon,” said al-Khasawneh. “We will not delay our response to all the needs that we can secure, within our capacity, for our brothers in Lebanon,” he went on to say.

Mikati in return expressed his gratitude “for the solidarity that you conveyed to me from His Majesty the King and the Jordanian government.”

In response to a question concerning bilateral relations between Syria and Jordan al-Khasawneh said “we in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan did not have disputes with anyone. We were, are, and will continue to be governed by the conviction that our relations with the Arab world and our Arab brothers are always strategic and friendly relations, always governed by the principle of good neighbourliness and non-interference in the internal affairs of others.”

Earlier this month, energy ministers of four Arab states set up a roadmap to supply Lebanon with Egyptian natural gas via Jordan and Syria to help boost its electricity production during a meeting in Amman.

Lebanon has been suffering for months from a lack of fuel that has reflected negatively on many vital sectors, including hospitals.

SOT, Najib Mikati, Prime Minister of Lebanon (Arabic): “I thank you for this visit, and for the solidarity that you conveyed to me from His Majesty the King and the Jordanian government, and we saw during the meetings that were held today how keen you are to secure basic matters. During the meeting, we discussed bilateral relations, especially with regard to the issue of energy, and this will be a topic of discussion between the Minister of Energy in Lebanon and The Minister of Electricity in Jordan, so that we can get electricity from Jordan, as well as Egyptian gas, which will pass through Syria and Jordan to Lebanon, which are very important and will be implemented quickly, God willing.” *MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Najib Mikati, Prime Minister of Lebanon (Arabic): “On the other hand, we also talked about the Lebanese-Jordanian joint committee, which has not met since 2015, and we have many agreements present to sign. His Excellency Dr. Bishr, decided that we make this visit to give value about solidarity, cooperation, and love with Lebanon, and he promised a visit soon because now it is Lebanon’s role to hold [joint committee] meetings. He stressed that the agreements should not be vague, but rather that they be rich and beneficial for the people of the two countries, and that they work to strengthen relations more and more between the Lebanese and Jordanian peoples.” *MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE*
