Activists spoke about the current situation at the border between Poland and Belarus on Saturday, as food and clothing aid had been delivered to the village of Machalowo.
Activist Axel Grafmann from the German NGO ‘Wir packen’s an’, who was visiting the area as the refugee crisis escalated, demanded that the German government take responsibility for the stalemate at the border, where migrants are stranded between the two countries. Grafmann, who was joined by Die Linke MP Zaklin Nastic, also asked Germany to provide support with a humanitarian corridor.
Local activist from the Groupa Granica group, Natalia Gebert, said that a group of one hundred refugees who crossed the Polish border in the last two days was intercepted, with many pushed back and some hospitalised.
The statements were made outside the local fire station turned into a collection centre for aid destined to migrants.

SOT, Axel Grafmann, Member of NGO “Wir packen"s an: “We want three things from the European Union, and the first thing is, that international law has to be followed with the human rights, as the Geneva Refugee Convention, and even European law should be right in the place here. It is not ok to [violate] human rights. So these are the things we want from the German government. Number three, We want that Germany takes responsibility for the things [that] happen here. It is not ok to leave Poland alone with this situation. I think Dublin too is not a good solution. You see it here. We want that Germany is helping the humanitarian corridor, and number three, we want a big rescue organisation like the UNHCR, and the big organisations, the International Red Cross can go to the red zone, and do what they have to do.”
SOT, Zaklin Nastic, MP and Member of Die Linke Party (German): “[When] Lukashenko has ordered the military to build tents on the border and to provide food, water, and drinks to the refugees on the Belorusian side of the border. Then he is showing to Poland and the EU, this is a clear sign, that he will take care of the refugees, but the European Union, as it was just described by Natalia, are rather being mistreated [by] this Polish government, this right-wing government, and they are being pushed back illegally.”
SOT, Natalia Gebert, Member of NGO Grupa Granica: “Some people are still coming out near Kuzhnica. And appearantly Lukashenko is going to milk it propaganda-wise for all its worth, by bringing tents, and food, and whatsoever. And small groups are trying to make their way to Poland, and I don’t think it is by choice. More likely they are forced to do so. Basically, I expect things to go back to the way they were before Kuzhnica.”
SOT, Natalia Gebert, Member of NGO Grupa Granica: “The majority of the group was intercepted by the border guards. Most of people were pushed back to the border. Some people were hospitalised, or otherwise allowed to stay at least to stay temporarily. But it remains to be seen if they will be successful in making their asylum claims.”
