Poland: Charity workers aid migrant families stranded at Poland-Belarus border

Red Cross workers were seen aiding migrant families stranded by the Poland-Belarus border, near Narewka, Podlasie, on Tuesday.

Several apparently unconscious migrants were seen being carried by the workers in black bags, with border security officers also present at the scene.

During a press conference in Bialystok, Podlasie Border Guard Katarzyna Zdanowicz announced that 599 illegal attempts to cross the border had been ‘thwarted’ in the past 24 hours, resulting in the detention of 9 migrants.

Tensions between the EU and Belarus have been escalating in recent months, with the EU accusing Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of deliberately sending migrants to the border in response to sanctions imposed by the EU.

Germany and Poland strengthened joint border patrols on the frontier with Belarus on October 20 and put a barbed wire fence in place to prevent the illegal flow. Earlier Lukashenko had stated that he would weaken control over migration at the borders with Western countries.

In the afternoon, around 16:00-17:00, a group of about 200 people in the area of responsibility of the Border Guard post in Bialowieza and at night the post in Dubicze Cerkiewne also prevented an attempt by several dozen people to cross the border illegally.
