Poland: Checkpoint set up at Kuznica border crossing amid escalating migrant crisis

Polish police officers set up a checkpoint near the Kuznica border crossing with Belarus on Tuesday, following increasing pressure from migrants attempting to cross into the country through Belarus.

Officers could be seen stopping vehicles, inspecting trunks of cars and speaking with at least one driver.

Amid rumours of a crisis instigated by Belarusian authorities, Colonel Marek Pietrzak, the spokeperson of the command of Territorial Defense Forces clarified the situation, stating: “There were no attempts to cross the border by force nor any attempts to instigate this crisis by the Belarusian services.”

In recent weeks, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has been accused by the European Union of orchestrating the arrival of migrants at the Polish border in response to EU sanctions against his country, an accusation which he has denied.
