Poland: Germans flock to border town to buy NYE fireworks despite government ban

Dozens of Germans were seen queueing up outside a fireworks shop in the Polish border town Slubice, to work around a fireworks’ ban within Germany on Sunday.

A usual magnet for pyro-fans, the Funky store, attracts buyers from all around Germany, said Fillip Scherner, the store worker, adding that “At the moment, because of the ban in Germany, we have about 300 customers a day, and we are pretty overloaded.”​

One of the German customers Diana explained “Fireworks just belong to New Year’s Eve.”

The ban on fireworks was issued last week by the German government to stop COVID from spreading during traditionally massive celebrations.
