Poland: Miners rally against EU energy policies in Warsaw

Trade unionists from Poland’s energy sector gathered in front of the European Union Office, Warsaw, on Saturday, in protest of EU energy policies.

Tens of participants held signs opposing rising energy costs, with one sign reading ‘hands off the Polish coal.’

MP Janusz Kowalski stated that banning the use of Polish coal would make the country dependent on gas from Russia, which would be Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ‘greatest gift.’

“If energy prices go up, food, product and service prices also go up. This is the result, in fact, of the thoughtless policy pursued by the European Commission. A thoughtless policy!” said MP Michal Wojcik.

Poland has pledged to phase out coal usage by 2049, despite being among 190 signatories of the ‘Global Coal to Clean Power Transition Statement’ on Thursday, which includes an agreement that major economies end coal usage in the 2030s.

SOT, Michal Wojcik, Member of parliament: “The voice of the street will be heard in Brussels, in Luxembourg too. Let them step back, because Europe owes a great deal to the Poles. The Poles are not some kind of pushover for the European Commission. We are fighting for sovereignty, we will fight for it and we will never give it up.”
