A couple of thousand Polish miners travelled across Europe on Friday to protest in the vicinity of the Luxembourg-based European Court of Justice, which has previously ordered a closure of the Turow lignite mine.

Miners and their supporters carried signs and chanted, holding torches and setting off coloured flares.

The protest was heavily monitored by the police, who set up multiple barricades which featured barbed wire.

The decision to halt production at Turow mine was taken by the European Court of Justice five months ago as part of an unsolved dispute between Poland and the Czech Republic, in which the neighbouring Czechs maintain that the mine is draining water reserves from the region.

For Poland, the Turow mine holds a key energy security role and is a major employer in the local area.

Polish authorities have refused to close the mine and face a €500,000 ($580,000) fine for every day the mine remains operational.
