Poland: Warsaw court dismiss charges against writer accused of calling President Duda 'moron'

The District Court in Warsaw discontinued proceedings on Monday in the case of Polish writer Jakub Zulczyk, who faced charges for calling Polish President Andrzej Duda a ‘moron’ on social media.

Judge Tomasz Grochowicz highlighted that the accused had not committed a crime through his behaviour, “The accused by his behaviour did not commit a crime, and thus, he cannot be held criminally responsible.”

The famous writer and journalist made a post on Facebook back in November, remarking on President Duda’s comments about US President Joe Biden’s election victory.

Local prosecutors charged him under an article in the criminal code which states, “Whoever insults the President of the Republic of Poland in public shall be subject to the penalty of the deprivation of liberty for up to three years.”

Mr Zulczyk is the screenwriter behind the popular television series ‘Blinded by the Lights,’ later made into a TV series for HBO Europe.
