Several Warsaw residents reacted to the judgment of the European Court of Justice that Poland had to pay a daily penalty of one million euros (1.16 million dollars) for each day that the Polish Disciplinary Board continued its work, as seen in the capital on Wednesday.
“Most of us think Poland is being harassed,” said Barbara Grzanka, a resident.
From the EU’s point of view, Poland violated the principle of an independent judiciary with the disciplinary chamber, which can sanction judges if necessary, and in this way undermined the separation of powers.
“Our presence in the European Union comes down to this, that we do not decide how to govern the country, but we are punished for making decisions that should be taken,” said Grzegorz, another resident.
While the Polish ruling party claimed that the chamber’s primary purpose is to fight corruption, the EU insists that the chamber serves as a political tool to control judicial decisions and pressure judges.
