Polish cabinet officials blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for the influx of migrants at the border between the two countries, with Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski describing it as an ‘attack’ on the country, while Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak spoke of ‘acts of aggression’ during a parliamentary session in Warsaw, on Tuesday.

“Since June this year, we have seen that a political decision has been made to attack our country. About hitting our friends from the Baltic states with the element of using illegal immigration. Decisions in this matter are implemented by the Belarusian regime, the regime of Alexander Lukashenko, but in fact the main decision-maker is in Moscow, it was Vladimir Putin who gave his permission,” said Kaminski.

“We saw how ruthlessly they tried to destroy the fence, attack Polish soldiers or officers,” Blaszczak said. “These were acts of aggression that can move from the border to Polish cities, if we can’t stop this wave. Let us remember that the vast majority of immigrants are young men who want to improve their economic situation and they do it in an extremely perfidious way.”

In recent weeks, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has been accused by the European Union of orchestrating the arrival of migrants at the Polish border in response to EU sanctions against his country, an accusation which he has denied.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Mariusz Kaminski, Minister of the Interior and Administration (Polish): “Since June this year, we have seen that a political decision has been made to attack our country. About hitting our friends from the Baltic states with the element of using illegal immigration. Decisions in this matter are implemented by the Belarusian regime, the regime of Alexander Lukashenko, but in fact the main decision-maker is in Moscow, it was Vladimir Putin who gave his permission. We have been observing their meetings for a long time at the political level, at the level of the secret services of both these countries, at the diplomatic level, at the level of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and border services. It is constant cooperation and consultation. There is no doubt that Lukashenko and his fallen regime, but still lasting and it is not known how long it will last, is doing this all with the full approval of Moscow.”

SOT, Mariusz Kaminski, Minister of the Interior and Administration (Polish): “And what about Russia? It must be clearly said that Russia has its long-term goals, and this undoubtedly destabilises the situation in the European Union. In fact, it is an attempt to permanently destabilise Central and Eastern Europe. Undoubtedly, these are the strategic goals of the Russians. They want to have this instrument of influence and blackmail Europe and also the free world. Performing it all not with their own hands.

SOT, Mariusz Kaminski, Minister of the Interior and Administration (Polish): “And what about Lukashenko? He is a politically wounded man, he is extremely emotional, he is passionate about revenge against our country, and also Lithuania for the great support that Poland and Lithuania gave to the Belarusian society, the Belarusian people in these difficult days of rigged elections in Belarus. This is his emotion, this his revenge.

SOT, Mariusz Blaszczak, Defence Minister (Polish): “The migrants may include criminals, potential terrorists, or disturbed individuals. Some people, however, were not convinced of that. Yesterday we saw with our own eyes aggressive young men who do not hesitate to cynically use children to arouse emotions, we saw how ruthlessly they tried to destroy the fence, attack Polish soldiers or officers. And to break through to the territory of the Republic of Poland by force. These were acts of aggression that can move from the border to Polish cities, if we can’t stop this wave. Let us remember that the vast majority of immigrants are young men who want to improve their economic situation and they do it in an extremely perfidious way.”
