Police prevented protesters from tearing down a statue of Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, in a park near the White House on Monday.

Tensions erupted as police cleared Black Lives Matter protesters from Lafayette Square, after they attached cables to the bronze equestrian statue of Jackson.

President Donald Trump condemned the act on Twitter as ‘disgraceful vandalism’.

As well as spray painting the base of the statue with words like ‘Killer’, demonstrators also defaced the columns of St John’s Church, where Donald Trump recently posed for a photo opp holding a bible.
