Puerto Rico: Thousands march in San Juan for better working conditions

Thousands of public employees marched through the streets of San Juan on Wednesday to demand higher wages, higher pensions and better working conditions.

Led by teachers and firefighters, the ‘Great March of Indignation’ marched from Munoz Rivera Park to La Fortaleza, the seat of the Puerto Rican executive branch.

Protesters could be seen holding signs reading, “people before debt” and “wage justice.”

Marisa Aponte, a teacher participating in the protest stated: “we really hope today in this march that we are given a dignified retirement.”

“For two years we want a dignified retirement, it’s what we deserve, an old age that we teachers can live with quality of life,” Aponte added.

The teachers are demonstrating for the second week in a row despite the fact that Governor Pedro Pierluisi announced last Monday a salary increase of €875 euros ($1,000 dollars) per month starting next July.

SOT, Marisa Aponte, Teacher (Spanish): “We really hope today in this march that we will be given a dignified retirement, that’s what matters to us, it’s not that they give us a raise that they are giving us for two years. We want a dignified retirement, that’s what we deserve: an old age that we teachers can live with quality of life.”

SOT, Anida De Jesus, Teacher (Spanish): “After this day I hope that the governor can have a clear mind and come to his senses and treat us with respect and give us what we deserve.”

SOT, Tatiana Garcia Correa, Teacher (Spanish): “And if the governor is a rational man, he should take into consideration that the people really need better living conditions because that’s what we serve him for.”
