A statue of the Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon located in the historic centre of San Juan was knocked down early Monday morning.
The sculpture suffered serious damage after being knocked off its pedestal.
The incident occurred just hours before the arrival of the King of Spain, Felipe VI, on the island.
The mayor of San Juan, Miguel Romero, has expressed his regret at the incident and confirmed that an investigation has been launched to identify those responsible.
