The number of victims of the bus explosion in Voronezh increased to 18 people, as Governor of the Voronezh Region Alexander Gusev reported on Thursday. Footage from the same day shows people and emergency services gathered near the bus following the explosion of yet an unknown nature.
Earlier, the Department of Health of the Voronezh Region reported 16 victims adding that one woman died.
The Russian investigation committee has opened a criminal case following the explosion.
According to the committee, criminologists of the Main Department of Criminalistics (the Forensic Centre of the IC of Russia) and investigators of the central office were sent to the scene of the incident.
Currently, they are providing practical assistance in examining the scene and finding out the circumstances of injuries to passengers of the shuttle bus.
The investigation is controlled by chairman of the IC of Russia Alexander Bastrykin in the central office.
According to Yuri Bursov, prosecutor of the Leninsky district of Voronezh, 35 passengers were on the bus at the time of the explosion.
Earlier, the media reported that the explosion of a gas tank could have been the cause of the incident. Deputy Head of the city Transport Department Maxim Zakharov noted, “It was a shuttle bus 10A, it did not have gas equipment, it was a diesel bus.”
Vice-governor of the Voronezh Region, Sergey Sokolov, said that at the moment various reasons are being considered, “So far, nothing indicates that this could be a terrorist attack.”
