Dozens of people participated in the discussion of the ‘foreign agents’ media law in Moscow on Saturday. The action had the format of a meeting with candidates for deputies in the upcoming elections to the State Duma.
Earlier, the Moscow mayor’s office did not permit the Trade Union of Journalists to hold a rally against the ‘foreign agents’ media law due to the ‘emerging epidemiological situation.’ After this, the organisers changed the format for a meeting of deputies with voters. There were no detentions.
On August 20, the Russian Ministry of Justice added Dozhd TV channel and the periodical media Vazhnye Istorii to its registry of foreign agents. In addition, several journalists have also been added to the list, including Editor-in-chief of Important Stories Roman Anin, journalists Olesya Shmagun, Alesya Marokhovskaya, Irina Dolinina, Roman Shleinov, and Dmitry Velikovsky.
Commenting on the Ministry of Justice’s decision, Dozhd Editor-in-chief Tikhon Dziadko said the channel has no foreign sources of funding. “One could expect anything, but we proceed from the premise that there have to be grounds for the decision. Dozhd TV channel is a media outlet with an absolutely transparent system of financing. All our financial reports are published on our website, we don’t have any foreign money,” said Dziadko.
The editorial board of Vazhnye Istorii also commented on its new status. “As for the list of foreign agents, there are already so many decent people and media outlets in it that it is simply unseemly not to be included,” the official statement on the publication’s website reads.
