Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday in Moscow urged Afghanistan’s neighbouring countries not to allow US or NATO military presence on their territory.

Speaking in a video address to participants in a ministerial meeting of Afghanistan’s neighbouring countries involving Russia, China, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, Lavrov said the US and NATO “are planning to move there after their withdrawal from Afghan soil, to have a military presence on their territory.”

At the same time, Lavrov stressed that Russia “firmly and consistently” supports the establishment of an inclusive government in Afghanistan.

“Citizens need to know that their rights and legitimate aspirations will not be paid lip service but will be protected by the letter of the law while respecting and taking into account local traditions and customs,” he said.

The minister also stated that the West’s 20-year military presence in Afghanistan had only led to “internal strife and bloodshed, the polarisation of society, socio-economic collapse, and a humanitarian catastrophe”.
