Muscovites on Thursday shared their views on the 11-day partial lockdown introduced to stem the spread of coronavirus.

One local, Nikolai Matveev, said vaccination was the key against the virus.

“The authorities, who organised and read all this, can see better. So, I think it should help, the flow has increased, people are being vaccinated,” he said.

Another passer-by, Anna Dragoleva, said the restrictions seemed too “harsh”.

“They are unnecessary in this situation. People, some have been vaccinated and others have been infected. People are still in contact, they will contact even more now, it’s our Russian mentality,” she stressed, adding that more should be done to improve vaccination rates.

For Muscovite Olga Garbuseva, the partial lockdown imposed by authorities is “the right thing to do”.

“It won’t solve the problem one hundred percent, but it will reduce some percentage of possible diseases,” she said, believing that especially school closures would curb the spread of Covid.

Moscow authorities last week announced the closure of most enterprises and non-essential services from October 28 to November 7. Shops, schools, beauty salons, gyms will be closed, while restaurants will be able to operate for takeaways only.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Nikolay Matveev, local resident (Russian): “The authorities, who organised and read all this, can see better. So, I think it should help, the flow has increased, people are being vaccinated. Vaccination is a necessary thing nowadays, I think. So, take care of yourself and everybody else.”

SOT, Zinaida, local resident (Russian): “Of course, it is interesting. Everything is closed: all the shops, all the cafes, and then the metro is open. There are more people there, more infection.”

SOT, Anna Dragoleva, local resident (Russian): “These measures seem harsh to me. They are unnecessary in this situation. People, some have been vaccinated and others have been infected. People are still in contact, they will contact even more now, it’s our Russian mentality. Therefore, everything should have been left as it is, but the vaccination campaign should improve, of course.”

SOT, Olga Garbuseva, local resident (Russian): “You can have different attitudes, but I think to some extent it’s the right thing to do. It [lockdown] won’t solve the problem one hundred percent, but it will reduce some percentage of possible diseases. Especially in schools, because most of the carriers are children, we’ve understood that for a long time. The fact that now schools have been allowed to go on holidays early will still reduce the percentage of disease, I’m sure of that.”
