Doctors at the intensive care unit of the Saratov Regional Clinical Hospital are treating a number of pregnant women and new mothers from the effects of COVID-19 amid rising regional cases.
“[One of the patients] has a severe myocardial lesion due to COVID-19. What the forecast will be, I can’t tell you now. Of course, we will do everything to save the girl, to save her child, but doctors are not always able to perform a miracle,” head doctor Elena Stiforova said on Wednesday.
The patients themselves say that it was difficult to recover, especially in the state of pregnancy.
According to Maria Raikova, who lost her child due to complications arising from a coronavirus infection, at the beginning of the disease she did not even understand what was happening. “The temperature just rises to 38.5 degrees celsius” and three days later there was “already a very large lung lesion,” she said.
“When the question arose: ‘Choose: either your life, or this [your child’s] life,’ what should I choose? Of course, I would choose my two children, who are waiting for me at home. Therefore, what happened, the detachment [of the placenta], happened because of COVID-19, because of a large lesion of the lungs, because I could not breathe at all,” the woman added.
Health Minister of the Saratov region Oleg Kostin visited the ICU of the hospital on Wednesday and noted that “the delta variant [of COVID-19] affects young poeople and even children.”
“As I have said, the ICU is not the place to heal. This is a place of extreme necessity. When a person does not cope with his functions [vital activity], the devices take it upon themselves, but they do not treat. They support life,” the minister said.
According to the regional authorities, 624 local cases of COVID-19 were detected on November 3, and 25 people died with the disease. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 103,236 cases have been registered in the Saratov region.
SOT, Elena Stiforova, Head Doctor of Saratov Clinical Hospital (Russian): “The patient I started to tell you about, and whom we don’t show, has had COVID-19. She has a severe myocardial lesion due to COVID-19. What the forecast will be, I can’t tell you now. Of course, we will do everything to save the girl, to save her child, but doctors are not always able to perform a miracle.”
SOT, Maria Raikova, women who lost her child due to complications arising from COVID-19 (Russian): “You know, it was unclear what was going on. The temperature just rises to 38.5 degrees Celsius. Since I was pregnant, in this condition, you can’t take antibiotics. [INAUDIBLE] You can take one that does not help absolutely. And for three days, when I tried to do something to somehow normalise my condition, I realised that it was useless and had to rush to the hospital. And it already turned out to be a very serious lung lesion. That’s why I’m the one to be blamed for everything. It’s my fault that I didn’t get vaccinated, that I lost my child because of my stupidity.”

And health is prepared in prevention. It is necessary to take care of yourself, not to contact infected people, to follow all the rules. And, of course, the only preventive remedy for today, and the current remedy, proven to be effective, is vaccination.”
