Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Tuesday that it had successfully performed a launch of its Kalibr cruise missile in the Sea of Japan.
The missile was launched from the Pacific Fleet’s Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky diesel submarine, with the ministry saying that the missile successfully hit its coastal target position on the tactical field of Surkum at a distance of more than a thousand kilometres (622 miles).
“The crew of the submarine conducted a set of training and exercises with working out the algorithm of actions during rocket firing with high-precision weapons. Immediately before the launch, the submariners performed a tactical manoeuvre of covertly entering the task area,” a Defence Ministry statement said.

The Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky submarine is one of the first diesel-electric submarines capable of carrying high-precision Kalibr cruise missiles in Russia’s Pacific Fleet.
