Uzbek citizens lined up outside the country’s embassy in Moscow to vote in the presidential election on Sunday.
Citizens could be seen standing behind a metal fence and being given drinking water and food. Police officers were patrolling the area outside the embassy.
One voter, Natalya, a citizen of Uzbekistan, said she felt it was her duty to “participate in the life of the Republic” and cast her vote for “candidate who will represent the interests of the people in the future.”
Polling stations for the presidential election opened on Sunday morning, October 24. Five candidates, including incumbent President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, are running for president.
According to the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan (CEC), about 19.9 million people are registered on the voter lists. Uzbekistan’s legislation requires 33 percent of registered voters to vote for the election to be recognised as valid. Polling stations will close at 20:00 local time (15:00 GMT).
According to Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Committee Bakhrom Kuchkarov, voter turnout by 11:00 local time (06:00 GMT) exceeded 33 percent.
