Chairperson of the Russian Federation Council Valentina Matvienko said Russia has “had enough of this outrage” amid YouTube permanently removed RT DE channels during an announcement on Wednesday in Yaroslavl.
Valentina Matvienko also added that the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media should take a strong stand in the form of large fines to oblige Youtube to follow Russian legislation.
In addition, she suggested that representatives of the “nationally-oriented patriotic business” should consider abandoning advertising on the YouTube platform.
The head of RT DE Dinara Toktosunova stated on Tuesday that YouTube permanently removed two RT DE channels.
Google explained the removal of two RT DE channels by the fact that “during the suspension of the rights, the channel owners tried to bypass the restrictions by using another channel. As a result, both channels were removed for violating YouTube’s terms of use.”
Russia’s media watchdog Roskomnadzor said the actions involved “violations of fundamental human rights and freedoms” and urged Google to remove all restrictions from the RT DE and Der Fehlende Part YouTube channels as soon as possible.
“If the owner of the resource won’t fulfill the Roskomnadzor warning, the legislation provides for measures of full or partial restriction of access,” was mentioned in the Roskomnadzor statement.
The German federal government stated on Wednesday that the decision to block the RT DE channels wasn’t taken by the authorities.
SOT, Valentina Matvienko, Chairperson of Russian Federation Council (Russian): “Colleagues, I guess we already have had enough of all this outrage that is happening, and these double, triple standards, when Youtube makes decisions, prohibits posting any information about the elections in the United States and Germany, which sow doubts about transparency, legitimacy, and so on there. They just categorically remove it. And at the same time, they remove one of the most popular TV channels, which is popular not only among Russian citizens, but also in other countries. They just stupidly delete, picking on some kind of odd so-called violations. So, everything is being done in order to drive [RT] off the air, out of the internet, a channel which provides different perspective on political events, gives objective news, and which has an increasingly large audience. So much for democracy, so much for freedom. It speaks for itself. In my opinion, Roskomnadzor [Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media] should take a strong stand in the form of large fines to oblige them to follow Russian legislation. If they won’t be heard, take other tough measures, we have sufficient tools, including tough responses. And we, the legislators, will see what else we need to pass into law that won’t allow these IT companies to behave like this in Russia. They must comply with our legislation, they must take into account our rules. They have no right to act arbitrarily like this and exclude Russian media from the Internet, from Youtube, and so on. I believe that it will be a very effective means, as a number of countries have already done, if at least a state-owned corporation, our nationally-oriented patriotic business does not simply advertise with them. Just as a sign of protest that they are doing such iniquity. And then, when these measures will seriously hit these companies in their pockets, maybe then they will behave differently. I believe that now we need to take all measures to prevent such a decision that violates freedom of speech, freedom of information, contradicts all conceivable and inconceivable European conventions, and bring everything in line.”
