Crews representing the Leningrad Army Air Force and Air Defence of the Western Military District continued to assist in extinguishing forest fires in the Republic of Karelia on Tuesday, as confirmed by the press service of the district.

During the course of six days of work, the crew of a multipurpose Mi-8 helicopter dropped more than 330 tonnes (330,000 kg) of water on the forest fires. Specialists have localised the spread of fire in the area of the settlements of Nastenjarvi and Kudama. Latest reports suggest that the current firefighting operations are underway near lake Syamozero.

Over 100 servicemen representing the Leningrad Air Force and Air Defence Army, as well as over 20 units of special equipment, were involved in extinguishing the fires in the region.
