Russia/Uzbekistan: Supersonic bombers hold joint drills near Afghan border

Four Tupolev Tu-22M3 supersonic strategic bombers took part in a joint Russian-Uzbek military exercise at the Termez training ground in Uzbekistan on Friday.

“As part of practical actions, four Tu-22M3 supersonic missile-carrying bombers took off from an airfield in the Saratov region, completed the flight and practiced multiple bombing strikes against camouflaged enemy militant encampments and ammunition depots at the Termez training ground,” said the Russian Defence Ministry in a statement.

MiG-29 fighter jets of the Uzbek air force also took part in the drill.

The Russian-Uzbek exercises have been taking place in the area bordering Afghanistan since July 30.

In total, about 1,500 troops and up to 200 units of weapons, military and special equipment from the two countries are involved in the manoeuvres.
