Hundreds gathered in front of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade on Saturday to demand judicial investigations into allegations made against Serbian ministers in the recent Pandora Papers leak.
“This is one global protest against state criminals, and as a matter of fact, we are not addressing the government and authorities today, because we know the government won’t change and so far, none of those in power have been prosecuted or called responsible for any of their crimes,” explained protest co-organiser Biljana Djordjevic.
“We are today addressing that small number of Serbian Institutions who can still work properly to react, not to be quiet about scandals and affairs when new evidence about state criminals appears, do not hide it but rather deal with that evidence and investigate them”, added Djordjevic.
Serbian political figures mentioned in the Pandora Papers include Finance Minister Sinisa Mali and Minister Novica Toncev.
The Pandora Papers, which contain 11.9 million leaked documents, or a total of 2.9 terabytes of data and were published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) on Sunday, alleged that 35 current and former heads of state, as well as 400 other officials from almost 100 countries, have made use of tax havens.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Biljana Djordjevic, Protester co-organiser (Serbian): “This is one global protest against state criminals, and as a matter of fact, we are not addressing the government and authorities today, because we know the government won’t change and so far, none of those in power have been prosecuted or called responsible for any of their crimes. We are today addressing that small number of Serbian Institutions who can still work properly to react, not to be quiet about scandals and affairs when new evidence about state criminals appears, do not hide it but rather deal with that evidence and investigate them. Also, we are addressing the citizens, we want to support them and to send them the message that all of us must do our job, do our civil duties and put pressure on those in power so they finally leave.”
SOT, Nenad Kostic, Protester (Serbian): “I am here today because I, just like other citizens here, will not tolerate criminals in state institutions. I am against the scum that is in power in our society, in our country. I protest against them.”
SOT, Mirjana Podolsak, Protester (Serbian): “I am here because I am against state criminals. We don’t have a state, we don’t have any sort of political system. Instead, we have an organised mob.”
