Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare was seen leaving the parliament building in Honiara on Monday under police protection after successfully defeating a no-confidence motion brought in by the opposition.

Various officials could be seen exiting the Parliament building, which was guarded by several police vehicles.

Sogavare was later spotted also leaving escorted by police officers.

MPs earlier rejected the motion tabled by opposition leader Mathew Wale with 15 MPs voting for, 32 MPs voting against with two refraining from voting, leaving Manasseh Sogavare as the Prime Minister in charge.

The vote of no confidence was preceded by a series of deadly protests in recent weeks in which four people were killed leading to the deployment of peacekeepers from Australia, New Zealand as well as Fiji and Papua New Guinea on the islands.

Protesters were accusing Sogavare of corruption and of using Chinese funds to support his government with tensions having been further exacerbated when the 66 year old decided to shift the country’s diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China in 2019.

Now on his fourth term as Prime Minister, Sogavare was previously overthrown twice by no-confidence vote.
