Mourners queued outside where the body of Archbishop Desmond Tutu is lying in Cape Town on Friday.
Attendees turned up to pay their respects to the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu at St. George’s Cathedral where his body is lying in state. The funeral will take place on New Year’s Day.
The family of late cleric who championed the battle against Apartheid in South Africa were present at the catherdral on Friday also.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to read the eulogy at the service.
Church bells have been rung at noon across South Africa every day and flags flown at half-mast for the man often described as the “moral compass” of his country.
“He was a lovely person, he was a man of God, preaching the word of God to all of South Africa actually to all of Africa. We love him, he was a man of peace,” said one mourner explaining South Africa’s adoration for Tutu.
Tutu, who requested a funeral without lavish expense or ostentation, would be cremated and his ashes interred beneath the floor of St George’s behind the cathedral pulpit.
The simplicity of the service was also appreciated by mourners present at the cathedral.
“What stands out for me is the simplicity of the flowers laying on Tutu’s coffin, the simplicity of his life but then also just the great impact,” stated one attendee.
Tutu, a Nobel Peace Prize winner passed away on Sunday aged 90.
