Spain: Arson suspected as Sierra Bermeja fire claims life of firefighter

A firefighter died on Thursday while battling the Sierra Bermeja fire in Malaga.

The blaze started late on Wednesday, affecting more than 2,100 hectares of land. Almost 1,000 people have been evacuated from their homes between Estepona and Benahavis.

“Investigation teams are currently looking into what could have happened. But all indications are that the fires at both locations could have been arson,” said the mayor of Genalguacil Miguel Angel Herrera.

Helicopters were also dispatched amid the firefighting operations.

SOT, Miguel Angel Herrera, Mayor of Genalguacil (Spanish): “We are still uncertain about the origin of the fire. What we do know is that it occurred yesterday at around 21:00, at two different points. Investigation teams are currently looking into what could have happened. But all indications are that the fires at both locations could have been arson.”

SOT, Policeman (Spanish): “No, help is too little. This is unbelievable. Resources are needed and this should have been prevented in winter. And we need equipment to be able to put out such devastating fires.”

SOT, Firefighter (Spanish): “We are trying to prevent the fire from crossing towards Los Reales, towards the left fringe. We are trying to stop the fire before it crosses the road.”

SOT, Civil defence agent (Spanish): “What we have done is to evict people from their houses from the highest part to the lowest part, because the fire has even threatened to enter some houses. We have done a complete evacuation from Forest Hill (Estepona, Malaga) all the way down and nd now all the way down (from there) as well.”
