Customers were seen presenting COVID-19 vaccine passports when entering bars, restaurants and gyms in Barcelona on Friday, after the passes became mandatory in Catalonia region on Thursday.

“I have met people who come here and think that I will let them in because they are regular customers, and then I do not let them in because they are not vaccinated and they are surprised. There are much more unvaccinated people than I thought,” said Ingrid, owner of one bar.

According to the Spanish Ministry of Health, six cases of the new Omicron COVID-19 variant have been discovered in the country, including three in Madrid, two in Catalonia and one in the Balearic Islands. One of the cases registered in Madrid was caused by community transmission in a person who had not traveled to Africa.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Ingrid, Owner of bar (Spanish): “There are people of all kinds. Most of them come with their passports in hand. We put a sign on the door to make it easier, because otherwise we have to hire someone, and that is unfeasible. There are people who take it well but others are outraged when you ask them and answer that they haven’t got it, and they leave with their heads down.”

SOT, Ingrid, Owner of bar (Spanish): “I have met people who come here and think that I will let them in because they are regular customers, and then I do not let them in because they are not vaccinated and they are surprised. There are much more unvaccinated people than I thought.”

SOT, Maria, Local resident (Catalan): “I had it for a long time, on paper and on the phone, and there was no problem. If they don’t want it, they don’t have to use it, but we don’t have to be in a place with people who are not vaccinated.”

SOT, Maria, Local resident (Catalan): “I think that in general many young people are a bit carefree, but if they are not allowed inside they will get vaccinated. The proof is the queues that are formed [in vaccination centers].”

SOT, Ramon, Bar client (Catalan): “I think that if things improve it will be good, but I don’t know how effective it will be. We have been testing things for a long time and it seems that in the end it does not go well… we will do it and see how it goes.”

SOT, Ramon, Bar client (Catalan): “Well, it may help people who are not vaccinated to get vaccinated, but it will be people who did not do it out of laziness or whatever, but people who are not vaccinated out of conviction, they will simply stop going to those places.”

SOT, Jaume, Owner of bar (Spanish): “Well, we started today. I don’t really know how it will work either, but they are usually regular customers. We don’t have to ask all the time, just once, I think that’s it.”
