Hundreds of people demonstrated on Friday morning outside the Italian consulate in Barcelona to demand the release of former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont.
The former president was released on Friday afternoon without precautionary measures.
After being arrested the previous day at the airport on the Italian island of Sardinia, under a European arrest warrant issued by the Spanish Supreme Court, and having spent the night in Sassari prison, the magistrate of the Court of Appeal of Sassari decided to release him on the sole condition that he must appear again in court on 4 October.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Laura Borras, President of Catalan Parliament (Catalan): “It is a serious fact that his status as an MEP has not been respected. We therefore expect Italy to respect the European Courts. And from the Moncloa, from the Spanish state, we expect it to respect the parliamentary inviolability of President Puigdemont.”
SOT, Teresa Pages, Protester (Catalan): “I think it will take a few hours, but I trust they will let him go and I hope it will unblock our process towards independence in a faster way.”
SOT, Silvia Valls, Demonstrator (Catalan): “I’m not very sure because a Spanish state and an Italian state that have always allied themselves to go against us and against our presidents and our exiles, well, I’m not at all sure. What I do have a lot of confidence in is the lawyers that President Puigdemont has.”
SOT, Joan Ramon, Demonstrator (Catalan): “Well, it is illegal because it is going against a suspension of the arrest warrant that was taken for granted, recognised by Spain, it is illegitimate because Puigdemont is the legitimate president of Catalonia, the Catalans have not changed him, he was changed to us from outside. And well, we will defend the legitimate president of Catalonia and we will defend Catalonia as necessary.”
