Emergency services could be seen working hard to remove layers of volcanic ashes still covering many areas of La Palma even during Christmas, on Saturday, after the Cumbre Vieja volcano hasn’t shown activity in ten days.

“It’s not joy or satisfaction - how we can define what we feel? It’s an emotional relief. And hope,” said director of the Canary Islands’ volcanic emergency committee, Julio Perez, adding, “because now, we can apply ourselves and focus completely on the reconstruction work.”

The Cumbre Vieja volcano has caused severe damage to the island, affecting over 3000 houses, and forcing the evacuation of thousands of inhabitants from their homes. Fortunately, there were no deaths reported between September 19 and December 14, when the activity first halted after 85 days of eruptions.
