Thousands of people demonstrated on Sunday in Madrid against the Citizen Security Law, popularly known as the ‘Gag Law.’

The protesters, called by the ‘No Somos Delito’ (we are not a crime) platform and more than a hundred other organisations, marched through the Spanish capital with banners and chanting slogans against the ‘Gag Law.’

Similar demonstrations have taken place in other cities in Spain. Since its approval, the ‘Gag Law’ has been widely criticised on the grounds that it limits fundamental rights and criminalises protest.

SOUNDBITE:

SOT, Miguel Angel Fernandez, member of the Press and Media section on the union CGT (Spanish): “For us, the ‘Gag Law’ is an attack on the most fundamental freedoms. We, as the press and media section, are very concerned about how it restricts the freedom of expression and freedom of information. In fact, we are already facing many problems and we really fear that everything will end just as it happened with the labour reform, so we have come to demand the total repeal of the ‘Gag Law.’”
