Spain: Farmers demand more aid during protest outside Madrid's ministry of agriculture

Dozens of farmers arrived outside the Ministry of Agriculture in Madrid to protest their situation and demand more aid for the sector on Wednesday.

Organised by the Union known as ‘Unions of Farmers and Ranchers,’ the group arrived in a caravan of tractors outside the ministry and cut the branches of an olive tree as a symbol of the agony that the sector is going through.

“We brought a table of demands to the Ministry, we want them to include green winegrowing, that they don’t cut the help to alcohol distillation, which can have a lot of uses,” said union coordinator Jose Manuel de las Heras.

Farmers are requesting more subsidies from the government and aid from the European Union, as well as an improvement in the price of their products.

SOT, Jose Manuel de las Heras, Uniones de Agricultores y Ganaderos union coordinator (Spanish): “Basically, we need to cover the damages caused by the pandemic, because the Oreca Channel was closed, this made the winegrowers sector suffer extreme conditions. We brought a table of demands to the Ministry, we want them to include green winegrowing, that they don’t cut the help to alcohol distillation, which can have a lot of uses”

SOT, Juan Sanchez, Farmer (Spanish): “Personally, I come from Toledo, from a cooperative in a small village, Filomena damaged about 60 percent of our harvest, we have to rip off about 40 percent of our olives, we won’t harvest anything in 20 years, besides that, we received money from Brussels, to help with Filomena, because it was a disaster, but they want to give us a small charity.”
