Hundreds lined the streets of central Madrid on the 43rd anniversary of the Spanish Constitution, Monday, calling the country to become a republic.
Protesters could be seen waving the flags of Spain’s Second Republic, as they chanted slogans against the Spanish monarchy such as ‘Spain tomorrow will be republican.’
“We are fundamentally remembering the thousands of citizens of this country who in the 1930s had to fight for the same thing as now; against a corrupt monarchy, just as corrupt as the one we have,” said Roman, one of the demonstrators.
December 6 marks the anniversary of the 1978 referendum in which the current constitution was approved, during the so-called Spanish transition that followed the death of dictator Francisco Franco.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Roman, Demonstrator (Spanish): “We are fundamentally remembering the thousands of citizens of this country who in the 1930s had to fight for the same thing as now; against a corrupt monarchy, just as corrupt as the one we have and have had to face during the uprising of traitorous murderers like Franco in 1936.”
