The traditional Christmas dinner organised by Priest Angel and his NGO Mensajeros de La Paz (Peace Messenger, in English) has been held in iconic places around Madrid such as the Senate, the Congress, the Cibeles Palace and the Museum of Fine Arts.
This year, the supper took place for the first time at the hall of the Royal Casino, a 19-century gentlemen’s club - which unanimously approved the request by the NGO.
Around 90 homeless people received an invitation to attend the luxurious dinner.
“We have been involved in this initiative for five years now,” said Priest Angel. “It will not be possible for us to be seated, but we can distribute dinner, they can take it with them, as well as a gift that the Casino also gives them. But the meaning is dignity, that is to say, Pope Francis repeats many times that one can be poor but never lose dignity, right?” he asked.
Due to a surge of COVID-19 cases in Madrid, guests had to pick up their meal inside the hall and dine outside.

SOT, Priest Angel (Spanish): “We have been involved in this initiative for five years now, in the Casino, in the Senate, in Congress, in the Museum of Fine Arts, we have had dinners in previous years and this year we asked to be able to have dinner here in the casino in the Royal dining room that the casino has. It will not be possible for us to be seated, but we can distribute dinner, they can take it with them, as well as a gift that the Casino also gives them. But the meaning is dignity, that is to say, Pope Francis repeats many times that one can be poor but never lose dignity, right? And this is what we do, but above all to alleviate loneliness, many of these people are very lonely and meeting here is undoubtedly something possible to do.”
