Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited the island of La Palma on Monday, after authorities declared the ending of the island’s volcanic eruption.
“We are facing the end of the eruption, but not the end of the emergency,” said Sanchez during a press conference.
“I would like to ask the residents of La Palma for their maximum understanding, the maximum collaboration as they have done so far, and undoubtedly also the maximum patience, because we are still awaiting some effects that can be harmful to the health,” stated Sanchez.
During the briefing, Sanchez also committed to the “reconstruction” and a “relaunch” of the island with the help of the Spanish government.
Members of the Special Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Care for Volcanic Risk (Pevolca) officially announced the end of the La Palma volcano eruption on Saturday.
The Prime Minister has visited the island eight times since the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano first began in September.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Pedro Sanchez, Prime Minister of Spain (Spanish): “We are facing the end of the eruption, but not the end of the emergency and therefore I would like to ask the residents of La Palma for their maximum understanding, the maximum collaboration as they have done so far, and undoubtedly also the maximum patience, because we are still awaiting some effects that can be harmful to the health of the locals. I am referring, for example, to the emission of gasses. Therefore, although I know that it is difficult, we are very aware of all the institutions, it is fundamental, that we pay attention, that we are aware of what science tells us, and what the Civil Protection services also tell us on the island of La Palma.”
SOT, Pedro Sanchez, Prime Minister of Spain (Spanish): “And the commitment of the Government of Spain, as of all public institutions, is firm and determined. We will not forget the residents of La Palma, no matter that the volcano has stopped expelling lava. On the contrary, now the task of reconstruction begins and also the relaunch of the island of La Palma, that is the commitment of the Government of Spain.”
