Long queues formed in front of the Infanta Leonor Hospital in Madrid on Tuesday, after a rise in daily COVID-19 cases.
“At the health center they don’t want to test us because they say they are overwhelmed,” explained Rosa, a queueing patient.
“We have been here since 10:30 in the morning because after Christmas dinner my sister tested positive,” added Rosa.
According to the latest data compiled on Monday by the World Health Organization, Spain has seen a total of 5.7 million cases of the virus and over 89,000 related deaths.
The number of new daily infections has been on the rise, as Europe faces a fifth-wave of COVID-19 and new challenges posed by the highly-transmissible Omicron variant of concern.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Rosa, Patient (Spanish): “At the health center they don’t want to test us because they say they are overwhelmed. We have been here since 10:30 in the morning because after Christmas dinner my sister tested positive.”
SOT, Rosa, Patient (Spanish): “My mother will also come now because we don’t want her to wait in line. No one attended her at the health centre, they said that a doctor would call, but the doctor hasn’t called yet. She has a fever and we’re in line for her too. It’s a disaster, you go there, they don’t attend you, they don’t answer calls, nothing at all. We went to the health centre, they said that a doctor will call… and well, we’re young at least, but my mother is 80 years old.”
SOT, Miguel Angel, Patient (Spanish): “I have been waiting exactly one hour and 15 minutes, I have come to do a test to see if I have COVID, because I want to leave Madrid and I want to be sure, although I am vaccinated, but I want to be sure.”
SOT, Costi, Patient (Spanish): “You have the answer here, I don’t think I have to answer you, the answer is here, after a kilometre and a half of a queue… I think this is the answer, that’s all.”
SOT, Antonio, patient (Spanish): “I tried to communicate with them by phone but they always hang up the phone, so I finally decided to come to one of the hospitals that they have authorised to do antigen tests. My daughter tested positive on the 22nd, and now I’m starting to feel symptoms, so I will probably test positive too.”
