Several residents waited in their vehicles in one of the areas affected by the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma on Sunday before being escorted by police officers to their homes, from which they were evacuated because of the danger of the now-static lava flow.

Members of the Guardia Civil police and UME (Military Emergency Unit) could be seen entering evacuated houses in the volcano’s exclusion zone.

There, they carried out gas measurements and air sampling in order to allow residents to return to their homes as soon as possible without risking exposure to gases that are toxic to their health.

According to reports, the concentration of gases since the end of the explosive phase of the volcano has dropped considerably. Gas emissions with be monitored and ash will be removal in the most affected areas, mainly south of the lava flows.
