In the early hours of Friday morning, a new eruptive vent opened at the northwest base of the La Palma volcano, generating two new lava flows that descend towards the west, according to the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute.

Spectacular aerial images released on Friday by the state agency show the different emission vents of the Cumbre Vieja volcano.

The hypnotic images recorded with a drone show the lava bubbling and emanating from the main crater, as well as a view of the alignment of the different vents of the volcano and the outline of the active lava flows.

So far, volcanic activity has damaged 981 buildings and forced the evacuation of more than 6,000 residents.

After the volcano erupted on 19 September, the lava reached the sea last Tuesday night, creating a new delta that has already reclaimed some 24 hectares from the sea.

The Council of Ministers declared La Palma a disaster area on Tuesday, announcing a package of economic aid for those affected by the eruption.
