Thousands of protesters rallied in the centre of Barcelona on Saturday against a court ruling which mandates that at least 25 percent of school subjects be taught in Spanish.
The protesters, many of whom carried signs in Catalan, object to the court decision which upheld an appeal for an increase in the number of Spanish classes relative to Catalan in regional schools.
Although Catalan remains the predominant local language in Catalonia schools, Elisenda Paluzie, president of the Catalan National Assembly, argued that the court’s decision represents “an expression of the will of domination, forced assimilation, and annihilation of the language, culture, and identity of the Spanish state.”
Several demonstrators carried pro-independence flags, and leaders of the movement were present.
Most Catalans are fluent in both Catalan and Spanish.

SOT, Elisenda Paluzie, President of Catalan National Assembly (Catalan): “This sentence is nothing more than an expression of the will of domination, forced assimilation, and annihilation of the language, culture, and identity by the Spanish state.”
SOT, Elisenda Paluzie, President of Catalan National Assembly (Catalan): “The ruling of the Constitutional Court on the Statute of 2010 made it very clear that Catalan could not be the language of reference in the administration, and that Spanish should be the main language in schools. The ambiguities of the state agreements of the transition were over. For this reason, and for many others, we are clear that there is only one solution: independence.”
SOT, Gloria Polls, from USTEC teachers’ union (Catalan): “Immersion has proved to be a consensual model, and the majority of society recognises it as an essential tool in our schools, while a minority is completely against it and does everything possible to remove the Catalan language from our schools.”
